Georgia Republican instructs House on proper Pledge of Allegiance technique

      Posted by Jeff from Rawstory

The pledge had no reference to a diety until 1954, when Cold War fever saw its inclusion to separate Americans from "godless Communists." The Supreme Court dismissed a case arguing that the phrase violated the First Amendment's guarantees of freedom of religion because the plaintiff had no standing to argue the case, not because of any inherent legal justification for the phrase.

Baby with 2 faces born in north India

      Posted by Jeff from MSNBC

A baby with two faces was born in a northern Indian village, where she is doing well and is being worshipped as the reincarnation of a Hindu goddess, her father said Tuesday. I find it amusing that MSNBC put this in their Kids & Parenting section.

    • God-talk in the presidential election (or why evangelicals are voting for Barack)

      Posted by udamnskippy from Scholarsandrogues

Evangelicals are not fundamentalists; many would resist the idea that they want to impose their worldviews on others. Many are now struggling to figure out how to live in a religiously and culturally plural culture, and Obama’s message not only resonates with their sense of integrity, but it also appeals to their desire to find ways to live together less divisively. I don’t think Barack has a prayer with the fundamentalists. But I think he’s definitely striking a chord among evangelicals.

    WAR IN IRAQ
Lonely Iraq sat on a wall,
Lonely Iraq had a great fall.
All of Bush’s tanks and all of Bush’s men,
Couldn’t put little Iraq together again.

Nothing about Barack Obama and whatever religion he may ultimately espouse concerns me as deeply as the unavoidable fact that he is SIMPLY TOO INEXPERIENCED, AT THIS TIME, TO LEAD THIS NATION. Look, people! The Emperor has no clothes! And a turban and traditional garb from ANYWHERE cannot disguise this fact! We haven’t the time, given the current state of affairs (WHICH WILL NOT IMPROVE SIGNIFICANTLY BETWEEN NOW AND NEXT JANUARY, and you might as well accept that), to have any candidate go in for “on the job training”. Idealism and a new broom both be damned, folks … we need a tough President who “knows where the bodies are buried” plus everything there is possible to know about the “inside the Beltway” crowd so that they may be made to shape up. It helps to know the “Dramatis Personae” before the play begins.

While I plan now to vote for Sen. Clinton, I’m not married to the concept … or to her (that’s Bill, remember?). I’d check the ballot elsewhere if I felt any of these other yo-yos were a sounder choice! Quite simply, they are not. Not at this juncture.

the xenophobia and overzealous puritanism of many of my fellow texans is only exceeded by their ignorance. but while there is a lot of it, we don’t have exclusive rights to it.

which proves that racism and xenophobia isn’t a ‘thing of the past’. it’s still here, and it’s merely sublimated. it will be another 300-400 years before it starts to disappear.

until then,. it’s always ready to come out again.

ps. GWB was not native-born. one of the nice things about us is that we’re willing to adopt furriners as texan, although it has become noticeably less so lately.

    my apologies.
