      A Successor for al-Zarqawi

Posted by j1o2n3a4s5 from Los Angeles Times

Even before Abu Musab al-Zarqawi’s death, something of a power struggle had begun in the al-Qaeda leadership in Iraq. Now the tussle has taken on an urgency, at the same time giving Osama bin Laden the opportunity to reimpose his authority on the insurgency, which was spinning out of his control under the ruthlessly stubborn Zarqawi. Four names have been circulated in the Arabic press as possible successors to the “Prince of al-Qaeda”: Iraq-based Egyptian terrorist Abu Ayyub al-Masri, an Iraqi named Abu Aseel, a Syrian named Abu al-Ghadia, and the less extremist Abdul-Rahman al-Iraqi. If Iraqi succeeds as the new leader, look for the group to move away from targeting civilians as freely and away from publicized beheadings. He would also avoid killing Shi’ites to foment civil war. The new leader, or council if one leader cannot be agreed upon, will be more clearly under bin Laden’s control. Bin Laden will be more “civilized” in handling al-Qaeda in Iraq than Zarqawi. That’s how bad Zarqawi had become.

Insurgent attacks in Iraq at highest levels

Posted by j1o2n3a4s5 from Boston Globe

Attacks are becoming more frequent, sophisticated, and deadly. While many Iraqis don’t support the violence, it only takes a dedicated group to continue to carry out the attacks in Iraq. Three and a half years in the occupation, it isn’t going to end anytime soon.

      Iraq’s resistance evolves

      Posted by j1o2n3a4s5

Iraq is simultaneously descending into both a civil war and a war of resistance against foreign occupation. The United States has been hoping to exploit the divide between Iraqi patriots and global jihadists, but the Sunni opposition is growing more structured and unified as it adapts to changing conditions, and may transcend those divisions.

      200,000 AK-47s in Iraq "missing"

Posted by j1o2n3a4s5 from Sunday Mirror

This is certainly a cause for alarm. One of the questions this article raises is what is ment by weapons being sent to “al-Qaeda.” Al-Qaeda is a loosely organized group of terrorists and criminals around the world. I’m not sure how they define “al-Qaeda” and whether or not they just mean Iraqi insurgents. Or the CIA trained group. Blowback.

      Posted by j1o2n3a4s5 from Scotsman

British troops under Iraqi attack in Basra, Eye witnesses say a missile brought down a British military helicopter which crashed onto a house in Basra. "One of them belonged to a major, I could see his rank," said the man, Abu Zaid. "I saw the remains of the others." the chaos worsened, shooting broke out between the British soldiers and armed militiamen, and at least four people, including a child, were reported to have been killed in the mayhem. "It won't change a thing if the helicopter was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. It is a daily risk and sadly, one day, a few get hit."
