      Ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro said on Tuesday that he will not return to lead the country as president or commander-in-chief, retiring as head of state 49 years after he seized power in an armed revolution.

      I was born two years after the revolution, the same year Iraq invaded Iranian frontiers and triggered an 8-year war. I'm what they call the “child of revolution” or sometimes “child of war.” Having experienced the bitterness and problems of the war and the limitations of living in a society of revolutionary Islamic teachings, I can say my generation has seen it all.

      Americans have always accepted a certain level of economic inequality as the inevitable consequence of an open capitalist society where some people through their own efforts do better than others. The presumption is that there is fairness in the marketplace and economic system. What a quaint, outdated belief.

      Mexico Calls on Zapatistas to Disarm

      It should come as no surprise that the Mexican government would want to blame the Zapatistas for the violence in Atenco last week, especially since being accepted into a UN Human Rights council this week. The Zapatista cause is clearly more important than ever to all Mexicans who are struggling against globalization, but I fear that they may soon be pressured back into battle if the fire which was rekindled in Atenco becomes a blaze. Marcos’ ‘Otro Campana,’ the ‘Red Alert’ in response to the brutality in Atenco, and his appearance on Mexican television are clearly desparate attempts for much-needed international support.
