Now, auditors are supposed to be independent gatekeepers and politicians should not be putting them under any pressure.

      “This is another example of the proud corps of U.S. attorneys being deprofessionalized,” said the senator, Charles E. Schumer of New York, who has led the Congressional inquiry into the removals. “We wonder in how many other offices the same lack of confidence is taking its toll. Attorney General Gonzales has a responsibility to see that the finest people are put in these positions, not simply cronies.”

      "While the process is not yet over ... the evidence before us makes it very hard for us to vote yes on your nomination," Schumer, D-N.Y., said in his final question and answer session with Alito, who has faced four days of hearings. "I just have to tell you that I remain very troubled, not by anything in your personal history, so much as by your judicial views," the senator said.
