    • NYT Lock and Load - Supreme Court Ruling on Gun Rights

Posted by Jeff from New York Times

That last part is the final indignity of the decision: when the justices go to work at the Supreme Court, guns will still be banned. When most Americans show up at their own jobs, they will not have that protection. This audaciously harmful decision, which hands the far right a victory it has sought for decades, is a powerful reminder of why voters need to have the Supreme Court firmly in mind when they vote for the president this fall. Senator John McCain has said he would appoint justices like Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito - both of whom supported this decision. If the court is allowed to tip even further to the far right, there will be even more damage done to the rights and the safety of Americans.

    • Court slashes judgment in Exxon Valdez disaster from $2.5B to $.5B

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Times

In dissent, Justice John Paul Stevens supported the $2.5 billion figure for punitive damages, saying Congress has chosen not to impose restrictions in such circumstances. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg also dissented, saying the court was engaging in "lawmaking" by concluding that punitive damages may not exceed what the company already paid to compensate victims for economic losses.

    • U.S. mulls Guantanamo closure as Bush term nears end

      Posted by Jeff from Rawstory

The Bush administration could announce plans by the end of its term in January to close Guantanamo prison and an upcoming Supreme Court ruling might be the impetus for this, senior U.S. officials and experts say. The government is under international and domestic pressure to close the prison.

    • Supreme Court Upholds Lethal Injection Use

Posted by Jeff from Truth Out

"We ... agree that petitioners have not carried their burden of showing that the risk of pain from maladministration of a concededly humane lethal injection protocol, and the failure to adopt untried and untested alternatives, constitute cruel and unusual punishment," Chief Justice John Roberts said in an opinion that garnered only three votes. Four other justices, however, agreed with the outcome.

Supreme Court Inc.: Heading toward fascism?

Posted by Jeff from New York Times

Today, however, there are no economic populists on the court, even on the liberal wing. And ever since John Roberts was appointed chief justice in 2005, the court has seemed only more receptive to business concerns. Forty percent of the cases the court heard last term involved business interests, up from around 30 percent in recent years.

An extremely well written argument against yesterday’s right-wing ruling on the Court.

Supreme Court rejects death for child rape

I saw today that Obama came out in support of the death penalty for child rape:

"I have said repeatedly that I think that the death penalty should be applied in very narrow circumstances for the most egregious of crimes," Obama said at a news conference. "I think that the rape of a small child, 6 or 8 years old, is a heinous crime and if a state makes a decision that under narrow, limited, well-defined circumstances the death penalty is at least potentially applicable, that that does not violate our Constitution."

Life in prison is good enough…if they survive. It’s not like child rapists get to live the life of Reilly(Riley?) in prison.
