Internet firms heading east in their quest for power

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Times

There is cheap electricity here, and lots of it. That is because the Columbia, the premier hydroelectric river in North America, flows nearby. Three publicly owned local utilities own five large dams on the river, and they produce much more electricity than the sparse local population can use. With power prices soaring, the three utilities have become the hydroelectric emirates of the Pacific Northwest.

      Cantwell's primary foe turns friend

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Times

The Cantwell campaign bills today's event as a "major campaign announcement." Clearly the hope is that without Wilson in the race, the anti-war and liberal criticism will subside. Wilson spoke with liberal blogger David Goldstein, who reported that Wilson had a personal meeting with Cantwell and "came away convinced that she's working to bring our troops home."

Seattle breaking ground today for South Lake Union streetcar

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Times

We need a whole city of light rail - not individual pet project one-offs of billionaires: The city predicts that when the line opens in fall 2007, about 300,000 people a year will ride the 1.3-mile route between the Westin Hotel and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Trains would arrive 15 minutes apart.

    • Property-rights measure to be on fall ballot

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Times

Opponents say I-933 is a \"developer\'s initiative\" that would gut zoning and other regulations that protect communities and the environment, imposing new bureaucratic burdens on local governments and fiscal burdens on taxpayers. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"It will remove a lot of the protections that people take for granted,\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" said Barbara Seitle, president of the League of Women Voters of Washington.

Several lanes closed on Aurora bridge due to possible suicide attempt

Apparently, the man jumped or fell to his death a short time ago.

Local Buses overflow, squeezing riders and transit in King, Snohomish counties

I’ve defnitely seen the increase in ridership on my own commute—#2 bus from the Central District, heading downtown. At peak commuter hours, the bus is often overflowing. It’s rough for my situation, because I’m trying to connect with ferries to Bainbridge on a commute schedule that takes 1.5 hrs mininum, door-to-door.  Full buses mean more frequent stops and more time spent at each stop as people struggle to reach the doors—resulting in schedule delays. I hope that more buses and/or more frequent buses, are in store for downtown commuter routes.

Nickels may be a community leading green mayor but he’s also a developer’s mayor and paul allen’s mayor and a do-little mayor on transit.

Seattle Mayor and Council Think $1,115 a Month for Rent is Affordable Housing

I was motivated to write to May Nickels in response to this.  Here’s what I wrote to him:

"I do not believe $1115 in rent a month is "Affordable housing."

The fact that there are many well to do business people in Seattle should not put a shadow over the Childcare professionals, construction workers, educators, and Administrative Assistants who make less than 40K a year.  If they had to pay $1115 a month it would most certainly be well over 30% of their income.

Are you trying to turn Seattle into an elitist community, or what?"

If you feel the same way, you should email important officials too.
