    • NYT on Seattle's Organic Tilth Restaurant - via Crosscut

      Posted by Jeff

Maria Hines, Tilth’s owner and chef, pays more than lip service to the adjectives local and seasonal, and she has created a restaurant that’s very much of its moment, not only in its attention to food miles but also in its menu structure. Every savory dish can be ordered in a half or full portion, so diners can build a meal from a succession of small plates.

The plea of a dying breed: Don't kill the bike messengers

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Post-Intelligencer

These days, bike messengers are a dwindling breed, vanishing with the rise of high-speed Internet, digital imagery and electronic court filings. Ten years ago, an estimated 150 messengers worked in Seattle. Today, the number is 50 to 75. Other cities have experienced similar declines, with The Economist reporting that New York has lost more than 1,000 messengers since the dawn of the new millennium.

The disturbing story behind the last great UW team

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Times

An unprecedented look behind the scenes — based largely on documents unavailable at the time — reveals a disturbing level of criminal conduct and hooliganism by the players on that team. Former coach Rick Neuheisel and athletic director Barbara Hedges accepted most of it, demanding little discipline or accountability from their athletes. And other community institutions, including prosecutors, police, judges and the media, went along.

Local Buses overflow, squeezing riders and transit in King, Snohomish counties

I’ve defnitely seen the increase in ridership on my own commute—#2 bus from the Central District, heading downtown. At peak commuter hours, the bus is often overflowing. It’s rough for my situation, because I’m trying to connect with ferries to Bainbridge on a commute schedule that takes 1.5 hrs mininum, door-to-door.  Full buses mean more frequent stops and more time spent at each stop as people struggle to reach the doors—resulting in schedule delays. I hope that more buses and/or more frequent buses, are in store for downtown commuter routes.

Seattle's smog levels violate federal limits

Not particularly. Still, air quality all over this country has improved a lot over the years. Note the "for the first time in more than a decade" comment. Also, the ozone limites were reduced this last May. Seattle was easily within the previous limits.

Chalk it up to the perfect storm of vacation traffic and hot, still air. It’s not evidence of increasing pollution.

Nickels may be a community leading green mayor but he’s also a developer’s mayor and paul allen’s mayor and a do-little mayor on transit.

Seattle Mayor and Council Think $1,115 a Month for Rent is Affordable Housing

I was motivated to write to May Nickels in response to this.  Here’s what I wrote to him:

"I do not believe $1115 in rent a month is "Affordable housing."

The fact that there are many well to do business people in Seattle should not put a shadow over the Childcare professionals, construction workers, educators, and Administrative Assistants who make less than 40K a year.  If they had to pay $1115 a month it would most certainly be well over 30% of their income.

Are you trying to turn Seattle into an elitist community, or what?"

If you feel the same way, you should email important officials too.
