Sex Without a Condom the New Engagement Ring?

      Posted by Shemuses

The comment thread on NPR is blowin' up! Listeners are ranting (and raving) about the new "What's the New What" segment on NPR in which Pendarvis Harshaw, an Oakland teen at Youth Radio, discusses how for his generation, sex without a condom is a sign of being in a committed relationship. Harshaw and his group of friends advocate getting tested for STD's and using birth control pills as a responsible way to have sex in a monogamous relationship. Listeners' comments are all over the place. Some are disgusted that NPR would even post this, while others are praising Harshaw and his friends for showing maturity and responsibility when it comes to sex.

"Mother Theresa. She's a saint. Did she ever do anything to change the situation of people, to make it less likely that people were in need of rescuing? No. It's all over the Bible that you help people who are sick. But for some reason we do not translate that into it being compassionate to stop people from getting sick in the first place. "It's sin, retribution, redemption. It's associated with this deep-seated Judeo-Christian morality, but we also see it in the Muslim tradition. We don't see it in Buddhist countries, for example -- they've been extremely pragmatic for the most part in their response to HIV -- and we don't see it in Confucian societies.

    • From a married lady to young, single sisters

It's funny the perspective that time gives. Occasionally I see a young sister made crazy by society's romantic expectations and I want to reach down from my lofty perch of 30+ years of life experience, grab her and say, "It will all work out...truly it will." I think of my early 20-something self, so worried about being paired up with someone. I admit that in some romantic entanglements back then, I forgave when I shouldn't have, overlooked what should have been obvious, gave up things that ought to have been sacred and a few times tried to make Mr. Right out of Mr. Wrong for Me.

Spanish ads compare women with genital cutting to **** toys

      Posted by Shemuses

There is great conflict among feminist activists over how to go about decreasing the prevalence of "female genital cutting," better known to most as "female genital mutilation." One of the reasons for this conflict is the tendency of "Western" feminists to impose their own worldview onto communities where we find cutting (mostly among some ethnic groups in Africa, but also found in the Middle East and Asia). For example, the importance of sexual pleasure derived from the clitoris, and the relationship between orgasm and women's liberation, is a central tenent of post-second wave feminism in the West.

GOP VP candidate Palin's 17 year old daughter is pregnant

Glad that I can entertain you.  How much ruling and how much governing have the republicans done as of late?  Closed door sessions with big oil, ya, that’s governing.  I don’t trust that a McCain administration will act any differently.

"expand government control of and intrusion into our lives as well as its reach into our pocketbooks"

Since when does making sure the gov’t has the money to help those most in need mean gov’t expansion?  As in making sure FEMA isn’t run by some unqualified friend of a friend?  Or actually funding ‘no child left behind’ (not saying it is a good program, but fund it at least)? Oh, right, America’s neediest, are on their own, why should you or we care about them?  Why can’t they just get a job/pay for health care/get off drugs?  When people like that suffer and stay in jail/not treated/etc., our society pays a lot more than some taxes we might have to pay.  I am not a bleeding liberal, the pure economics of it state that if a little is paid up front to get someone on their feet, the down stream savings in health care, public lawyers, prison, etc… does more than make up for the cost up front. I know there is no utopia, some people will always suffer, but a gov’t and society that tries to help the weakest link, is stronger and richer for it.

Also, Obama hasn’t talked about raising taxes for the lower to middle classes, just for the richer of those among us.

Biden brings more stability to the ticket than does Palin.  Even Lieberman is a better choice.  He knows how to buck the Washington crowd more so than Palin.  Just that he doesn’t favor government’s control over women’s bodies/lives…

By the way, glad that there is a forum like this so that I don’t have to always preach to the choir…

It’s clear that Palin is much more like Bush than McCain, although McCain has flipped to the President over this past year. His 90% voting the Bush line doesn’t look like any maverick to me. Palin’s crazy religious views reflect Bush. I remember counseling a young college student who had stabbed a young lady in his chemistry class because "God told him to." Her firing of staff people in her city hall because they didn’t agee with her mirrors Bush to a tee. How can a reputable party strongly endorse someone who so closely replicates an individual who has only a 29% support, which I have always believed is very suspect. No, John McCain didn’t vet this individual he just fell for another pretty face.

"Yet again.  This choice shows the Republicans just want to win so they can keep ruling, not governing,  the country. "

Thanks, I needed a good laugh. :) I was under the impression that’s what the Dems wanted to do. After all, Obama wants to greatly expand government control of and intrusion into our lives as well as its reach into our pocketbooks. The old "Rape Paul to buy Peter’s vote" thing. The R’s are libertarians compared to the Dems and Obama.

And cronyism? Hardly. Palin and McCain have very different viewpoints on many different issues. McCain is a very liberal follow overall, which is why the conservatives don’t much care for him. Palin was an inspired choice which will bring a lot of votes into the McCain camp, even if not so many of them are from Hillary’s camp.

Palin won’t be gone, she’s a great choice and brings alot to the ticket. Far more than Biden did for Obama. So much for Obama’s claims to be a uniter.

Yet again.  This choice shows the Republicans just want to win so they can keep ruling, not governing,  the country.  She doesn’t even know what the VP does.  But she does think the way the farther right does, and that makes her ‘qualified’.  Political cronyism…Just like Brown (who ran FEMA during Katrina) and Alberto Gonzales (the former AG who was just  cited for misshandling classified documents, he didn’t put them in his safe at home b/c he forgot the combo).  Even David Brooks of the NYT doesn’t think she is a good VP candidate.  Great judgement Mr. McCain.  Hillary’s supporters know Gov. Palin does not represent their values.

After further study and input I find this woman is a religious lunatic, the kind children often rebel against and do extreme acts just to dizt the parent.

Apparently, Sarah Palin’s future son in law isn’t yet finished with finishing school.

Not sure how representative he is about GOP family values.
