    • More ministers quit Somali government as talks postponed

      Posted by Billbar from Reuters

Four more ministers resigned from Somalia's Western-backed government on Tuesday, in a move that may ultimately clear the way for rival Islamists to take ministerial posts. "This is our decision because this cabinet has failed the reason for which it was established. It has failed to reconcile the Somali people," said Sayeed Hassan Shire, an assistant minister who resigned.

Stay out of Somalia, US tells Eritrea and Ethiopia

      Posted by Billbar from Reuters

"There are many foreign elements in Somalia right now," U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer said, speaking to reporters on a visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo to monitor elections there. "Neither the Union of Islamic Courts nor the Transitional Federal Government can take the high ground by saying the other is violating Somali sovereignty...they've all invited in foreigners, all been backed by foreign forces," she added. "You want to keep Ethiopians and Eritreans out of Somalia, that they don't take their border conflict and move it into the Somalia venue," she said.

The move of fresh Ethiopian troops into the anarchic country raises the prospect of renewed war in Somalia. Ethiopia strongly backs the UN-supported government of President Abdullahi Yusuf and has vowed to prevent the country from slipping into the hands of Islamic extremists.

The battles broke out on Sunday when the Islamists set a daybreak ambush in Mogadishu's Kilometre Four for fighters loyal to Hussein Aideed, an interior minister in the interim government, and another warlord, Abdi Awale Qaybdiid. "The hospital is under very heavy mortar and artillery attack and stray bullets are hitting. Chaos is everywhere in the hospital and staff are running away," Abdikadir Sheikh, a medical official at Mogadishu's Madina Hospital said.
