Chavez plays oil card in Nicaragua _ csmonitor.com

Posted by j1o2n3a4s5 from Christian Science Monitor

Hugo Chavez has been providing oil at cheap rates for a while to local mayors in Nicaragua, to the dismay of the Managua based elite and the U.S. government. Now he has promised to provide oil to a country that is gripped by high prices and shortages as the local bully looks on and claims that its “programs designed to improve health, education, trade and development, as well as democracy and the rule of law,” are much more important than Nicaraguans keeping warm. With Nicaragua experiencing a long running medical strike in response to low public sector wages, in itself a result of IMF mandated structural reforms, the election could well send Ortega back to power after sixteen years.
