- Lighting Up The Past And The Future

  My father used to say that every problem can be solved by either a bigger hammer or more light. While the politicians swing their proverbial hammers scientists are lighting up not just the cosmic future, but also our cultural past. Much of what we know about extrasolar objects comes to us because of astronomical spectroscopy - ostensibly, the reading of light.

- Stephen Hawking lands after zero-G flight

  I had worried it would kill him... As Zero Gravity Corp.'s modified Boeing 727 jet touched down here at NASA's Shuttle Landing Facility on Thursday. Although specific details are not yet known, Hawking's host for the flight, Zero Gravity co-founder and chief executive officer Peter Diamandis, signaled with his fingers that the world-famous physicist went weightless eight times.

- Sri Lankan Terrorists Hack Satellite

  The Tamil Tigers Liberation Front a separatist group in Sri Lanka, which has been classified as a terrorist group in 32 countries has moved up from routine sea piracy to a space-based one. They have been accused of illegally using Intelsat satellites to beam radio and television broadcasts internationally. Intelsat has been accused of having business links with Hezbollah before, but claim that they are blameless this time and LTTE was using an empty transponder.

  After testing, the satellite will be available for commercial use. From the article: 'Potential nonmilitary benefits of the IRIS program include the ability to route IP (Internet Protocol) traffic between satellites in space in much the same way packets are moved on the ground, reducing delays, saving on capacity and offering greater networking flexibility

  Unlike the solar-rechargeable lithium-ion batteries used by the US space agency's (Nasa) Mars rovers, the Chinese model will eventually run on a radioisotope thermoelectric generator. Such devices convert heat from a radioactive source into electricity.

  After global warming, we have to work on stopping killer asteroids. This Slashdot post outlines NASA's plan to save us from dinosaurial extinction - but this NYT story seems to say that the U.S. lacks funding. Maybe this is Bush's pro-rapture policy?
