    • The Pope's Holy War Against Liberation Theology

      Posted by Shemuses

The recent election of former Bishop Fernando Lugo as President of Paraguay poses a sticky dilemma for the Vatican and underscores the hostile political environment facing incoming Pope Benedict XVI in South America. Lugo, who was known to his constituents as the "Bishop of the Poor" for his support of landless peasants, advocates so-called Liberation Theology, a school of thought which took shape in Latin America in the 1960s.

Posted by Shemuses from New York Times

As many as 100 Tibetans were arrested in northwest China on Thursday after they demonstrated against the earlier detention of monks from a nearby monastery, witnesses and a Tibetan human rights group said Friday. Local residents reached by telephone on Friday said that the police beat and arrested people at an open-air market in Tongren, a town in Qinghai, a western province bordering Tibet, after they refused orders to leave.

      Bring on Lama-Palooza

      Posted by Jeff from crosscut.com

Lama-Palooza's man behind the curtain is a driven entrepreneur named Dan Kranzler, a Charles Foster Kane for children and early learning (better that than, say, politics or yellow journalism). Kranzler is a Bellevue-based wireless executive who founded Mforma, a mobile-entertainment company, in 2001.

    The Cult of Chris McCandless

I just watched this film and I am haunted. Although I knew about  Chris I had no idea that his journey killed him. I will forever remember him and I am better for knowing that he was bold and brave enough to do what he needed to do.

I am also very sad that he only found out to late that there is nothing without the company of others.

    His life will be remembered.

If anyone knows an email address for his family I would love to convey my respects(after all these years)

    Vitter was a repeat customer

Vitter was a repeat customer and will continue his illegal and immoral activity as long as he can go to his priest and be forgiven. He and his wife seem to feel that they deserve forgiveness from the American people but in the eyes of many, the hypocrisy is worse than the sin itself. We are a broadminded and forgiving nation, but when looking back on the self righteous attitudes of he and he wife during the Clinton/Lewinsky scandel, most of us feel no pity for these two.

    Malaysia issues fatwa on ghosts

“We don’t want to expose Muslims to supernatural and superstitious beliefs,” the Berita Harian newspaper quoted him as saying.

Could the irony be any more clear-cut?
