Horrific Blaze Unites Cultures in Rituals of Grief

Posted by Shemuses from New York Times

A father arrived by plane in the morning, returning to a new world: Five of his children were dead, his old life wiped away. His journey from a small town in the West African country of Mali took 24 hours. The bodies of his children waited for him at a funeral home. Two others were hospitalized. Soon after landing, he went to a mosque in the Bronx, where thousands prayed.

Between Black and Immigrant Muslims, an Uneasy Alliance

Posted by Shemuses from New York Times

Only 28 miles separate Imam Talib’s mosque in Harlem from the Islamic Center of Long Island. The congregations they each serve — African-Americans at the city mosque and immigrants of South Asian and Arab descent in the suburbs — represent the largest Muslim populations in the United States. Yet a vast gulf divides them, one marked by race and class, culture and history.

    • Bishop demands 'better theology' of sex

Posted by Shemuses from Globe and Mail

The Christian church has a deeply flawed understanding of sex that has led to morally groundless objections to masturbation, birth control, abortion and homosexuality, says a leading Canadian Anglican bishop. In particular, the church has been wrong for centuries on the notion that sex exists only for the purpose of procreation, Right Rev. Michael Ingham, bishop of the Greater Vancouver Diocese of New Westminster, told a conference in Ottawa last night.

    The Cult of Chris McCandless

I just watched this film and I am haunted. Although I knew about  Chris I had no idea that his journey killed him. I will forever remember him and I am better for knowing that he was bold and brave enough to do what he needed to do.

I am also very sad that he only found out to late that there is nothing without the company of others.

    His life will be remembered.

If anyone knows an email address for his family I would love to convey my respects(after all these years)

    Vitter was a repeat customer

Vitter was a repeat customer and will continue his illegal and immoral activity as long as he can go to his priest and be forgiven. He and his wife seem to feel that they deserve forgiveness from the American people but in the eyes of many, the hypocrisy is worse than the sin itself. We are a broadminded and forgiving nation, but when looking back on the self righteous attitudes of he and he wife during the Clinton/Lewinsky scandel, most of us feel no pity for these two.
