  Patty Stonesifer, who started the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation above a pizza parlor seven years ago and has overseen its growth into the world's largest philanthropic institution, said Wednesday that she would step down by the end of the year.

  Stonesifer says, "It would be naive, Stonesifer said in a letter published today on the editorial page of the Los Angeles Times, to think that changing the foundation's investment practices could stop the human suffering blamed on the practices of companies in which it invests billions of dollars."

  "Do you say no to a 7-year-old girl, but yes to Warren Buffett?" Stonesifer asked. "One way or another, she did convince us to do some deep thinking." Stonesifer said the foundation won't solicit money and prefers people give directly to charities working in related areas.
