      More Tests Please

      No Child Left Behind has created the wrong kind of debate about testing. Given the lack of new funding, many states are jiggering their tests to obscure the failure of poorly performing schools and undermining the accountability that was the core goal of the program. Others are attempting to opt out of the program altogether. The process is wasteful, confusing to students, and fails to produce the information that education enterprises badly need to ensure continuous improvement in what they do

      One World, One Dream: I Was Detained For Tibet

      Sam Price was among six activists who were detained by Chinese authorities on August 7 for his role in an action designed to raise awareness about the continuing plight of Tibet. He and fellow members of Students For A Free Tibet unfurled a flag on the Great Wall of China, which read: "One World, One Dream: Free Tibet," and they were swiftly detained for less than two days before being swiftly deported. Here is his story.

      The phrase doesn’t make any sense, and it wasn’t supposed to. 18 year old high school senior Joseph Frederick unfurled the 14 foot banner on a public sidewalk across the street from the high school during a non-school event. High school administrator Deborah Morse confiscated the banner and suspended Frederick for “advocating drug use” evidently in view of other high school students.

      As investigations continue into improper financial dealings between the student loan industry and universities, more schools, companies, and federal officials have been implicated. Most recently, evidence demonstrates that the US Department of Education has increasingly helped promote the interests of lenders by rejecting any federal regulation of the relationship between the banks and schools.
