      Grim New Turn May Harden Darfur Conflict

      For the first time in more than two years, rebels fighting the government for more autonomy are making brazen, direct and successful attacks on soldiers, and are declaring that all previous cease-fires are no longer in effect. A visit to the site of the newest fighting, the first by a journalist, revealed a hardening conflict that is increasingly taking place along porous borders among some of the least stable countries in Africa, threatening to ignite a wide conflagration in the heart of the continent. “The international community will not do it,” said Gen. Khatir Toor Khala, a rebel field commander based on the border. “So it is for us to protect the innocent civilians of Darfur.”

      Sudanese Vice President Ali Osman Taha has vowed the regime would maintain its opposition to a UN peacekeeping force for Darfur and hailed Hezbollah as a model of resistance, official media said. ADVERTISEMENT "We have options and plans for confronting the international intervention," state news agency SUNA quoted Taha as telling a rally in the North Kordofan State capital of El-Obeid late Thursday.

      Sudan armies abuse children

      In a report to the Security Council implicating the Sudanese Armed Forces, Mr Annan condemned the practice of recruiting child soldiers. His report said this continued despite peace deals in southern Sudan and the western Darfur region. It also said sexual and other violence against children by army and militia groups persisted in southern and western Sudan.

    • Sudan suspends all UN mission work in Darfur

      Sudan Foreign Ministry spokesman Jamal Ibrahim said the ban was imposed because a U.N. helicopter had moved rebel leader Suleiman Adam Jamous, who rejects a peace deal signed on May 5 without consulting the government in Khartoum. Elderly Jamous was the respected humanitarian coordinator for the main rebel Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) before it split in November last year. He was the main contact for the more than 14,000 aid workers in the region.

      Fibe Democratic Congress members Tom Lantos of California, James McGovern and John Olver of Massachusetts, Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas and Jim Moran of Virginia were among 11 protesters arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and unlawful assembly, a misdemeanor subject to a fine.

      Chad capital on edge fearing more rebel attacks

      Chad's President Idriss Deby held a victory rally attended by thousands of supporters in the sun-baked capital N'Djamena on Saturday but many nervous residents feared rebels fighting to topple him may return. Chad also threatened to cut off oil production unless it was given access to revenues frozen in January by the World Bank in a spat over how petro-dollars are spent.
