    • All roads led to Rome for the world’s biggest family reunion

      Posted by Orato

Since more than 300,000 pilgrims from all over the world were expected to attend the 2002 canonization of Blessed Josemaría Escrivá in Rome, I did not expect to see anyone I knew there. The crowds would be just too big to find anyone, and my plan was to stick close to my family members and try not to get lost in the maze of streets. So imagine my surprise and delight as we encountered an astonishing number of friends from the Philippines, friends we hadn't seen in years.

      Fresh Bait

      Posted by Orato

I love a good dramatic run into the ocean, Pam-Anderson-Baywatch style. But ever since I watched “Jaws,” I swim out into the ocean and immediately begin to visualize my own legs dangling around beneath the surface, fresh bait for the lurking Great Whites. I never really saw myself as a person who would thrive off aquatic adventures. But wonders never cease.

      Burma In Clouds

      Posted by Orato

Burma has one of the world's most odious governments, and accordingly Burmese have watched their standards of living, welfare and general situation decline progressively since the 1950s and 60s. On top of a military dictatorship, the country is wracked by civil war, poverty, corruption and diseases like malaria and HIV/AIDS. While this has happened and happens, the world has looked and looks away. I wanted to see and feel it for myself...

      I Was Nearly Killed

      Posted by Orato

It was my second visit to Jalalabad. But this time the route was different. This route was insecure and, in 1994, when rival jihadi groups were killing each other mercilessly to get power, it was the most dangerous route as there were different rival commanders every one-mile. And they had plenty of check posts where their fighters looted and abused going and coming people.

      Pound touches 14-year dollar high

Posted by Jeff from BBC News

America - you didn't want to actually ever be able to afford Europe again, did you? Thank Bush and the Iraq war. The pound has hit a 14-year high of $1.9938 against the dollar, with many experts believing it will rise above $2 in the next few days.

      'Health warnings' for holiday ads

Posted by Jeff from BBC News

Flying is just too cheap. I just bought a RT ticket to NY for $275. Taxes would be a good start. Simon Retallack, the IPPR's head of climate change, said the evidence of aviation's negative environmental impact was "just as clear as the evidence that smoking kills".

Wealthy people are increasingly paying for friends to accompany them on vacation

I think I’ll go to Kenya! Anyone want to go? Oh, sorry – no more room.
