    • As Turkey-Iraq crisis escalates, US plans military strikes on PKK bases

      Washington is clearly desperate to prevent a Turkish military intervention in Iraq or a breach in the US/Turkish alliance. Quite apart from long-term strategic considerations, the US military funnels around 70 percent of its air cargo to Iraq via a major US air base in southern Turkey. At the same time, more than 1,000 Turkish troops are in Afghanistan as part of NATO forces, helping to prop up the US-led occupation of that country.

      Turkish Troops, Weapons Head Toward Iraq

      Dozens of Turkish military vehicles loaded with soldiers and heavy weapons rumbled toward the Iraq border on Monday after an ambush by guerrilla Kurds that left eight soldiers missing and killed 12. Iraq's president said the rebels would announce a cease-fire later in the day.

    Lenore G. Martin: Turkey's Iraq Problem

    While I don't agree with the aims and solutions proffered by Martin, she is right that we are in an untenable position - caught in between two allies. Turkey, with the approval of Iran, may escalate to full-scale war with Kurdistan. Remember Cyprus.
