Turkey All Set For General Election

Posted by Kaerast from Al Jazeera

Turkey's election candidates have moved into the final day of campaigning, ahead of the country's general election. Surveys indicate that the ruling party of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey's prime minister, is likely to retain its majority. An election win will give the AK party another five years in power, though it is likely to be with a weaker margin as other parties join the parliament.

The leaves of military personnel have been canceled and additional forces have been deployed to the border with Iraq as the military apparently prepares for an operation against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The measures come amid frustration with US inactivity against the PKK and the expected infiltration of PKK militants from their mountain bases in northern Iraq with the arrival of spring.

A Turkish Airlines plane carrying 113 people from Albania to Istanbul landed in Italy on Tuesday after being hijacked by two Turks protesting the pope's visit to Turkey next month, officials said. The plane landed in Brindisi, Italy, and the hijackers told authorities they were prepared to surrender, said Candan Karlitekin, chairman of Turkish Airlines' board of directors. "They seem to be not particularly hostile nor armed," he said. "The passengers are not under any threat," Karlitekin said. "There is no loss of life or any injuries."

If Washington opposes the invasion, it risks further estrangement from Turkey, a state positioned to play a critical strategic role in a region where Iran increasingly challenges the United States for dominance.

Lenore G. Martin: Turkey's Iraq Problem

While I don't agree with the aims and solutions proffered by Martin, she is right that we are in an untenable position - caught in between two allies. Turkey, with the approval of Iran, may escalate to full-scale war with Kurdistan. Remember Cyprus.
