Kurdish rebels warn of "hell" after Turkey blasts

      Posted by Billbar from Reuters

The Kurdish Liberation Hawks (TAK) said it bombed a busy shopping area in the coastal resort Antalya on Monday, killing three people and wounding dozens, including European and Middle Eastern tourists. The blast followed four bombs in the Mediterranean resort of Marmaris and in Istanbul that wounded 27 people. "We vow to turn the monstrous TC (Turkish Republic) into hell ... with our warriors who have pledged revenge," TAK said in a statement on its Web site. It was not immediately possible to verify its authenticity. More than 30,000 people have since been killed in the separatist conflict.

Kurds flee homes as Iran shells Iraq's northern frontier

Posted by Billbar from Guardian UK

Turkey and Iran have dispatched tanks, artillery and thousands of troops to their frontiers with Iraq during the past few weeks in what appears to be a coordinated effort to disrupt the activities of Kurdish rebel bases. Scores of Kurds have fled their homes in the northern frontier region after four days of shelling by the Iranian army. Local officials said Turkey had also fired a number of shells into Iraqi territory. Frustrated by the reluctance of the US and the government in Baghdad to crack down on the PKK bases inside Iraq, Turkish generals have hinted they are considering a large-scale military operation across the border. They are said to be sharing intelligence about Kurdish rebel movements with their Iranian counterparts.

"Triple Alliance": The US, Turkey, Israel and the War on Lebanon

      Posted by j1o2n3a4s5 from globalresearch

If appropriate sanctions against Israel are not adopted by the UN Security Council, due the encroachment of the one or more permanent members of the Security Council, the heads of State and heads of government of those permanent member countries of the Security Council (e.g. US, UK, France) should be considered, under the Nuremberg Charter, accomplices of Israeli “crimes against the peace”, “war crimes” and “crimes against humanity”.

Will new pipeline ease the West's energy woes?

Posted by Billbar from Christian Science Monitor

Twelve years in the making, the $4 billion Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline will pump 1 million barrels per day of Caspian Sea oil toward Western markets when it becomes fully operational next year. The US-backed pipeline has long been seen by Western governments as a way to tap Caspian oil without involving Iran and Russia. But with Turkey increasingly courting energy-rich Russia, the project may prove more prickly than anticipated. Russia is leveraging Turkey's dependence to bolster its dominance as an energy supplier, say experts.

US Sees Turkish Military Operation in Iraq as Unwise

      Posted by Billbar

Turkey says that if the US or the Iraq cannot secure Turkey-Iraq borders, Turkish forces would do so. US Ambassador to Ankara Ross Wilson yesterday said that Turkey conducting a cross-border operation into Iraq wouldn’t be wise. There are many terrorist camps in Northern Iraq and more than 4,000 PKK terrorists have been using Iraq as a base to attack Turkey and other neighboring countries, yet the US forces have done no concrete measures against the PKK terrorists.

Lenore G. Martin: Turkey's Iraq Problem

While I don't agree with the aims and solutions proffered by Martin, she is right that we are in an untenable position - caught in between two allies. Turkey, with the approval of Iran, may escalate to full-scale war with Kurdistan. Remember Cyprus.
