      Chavez plays oil card in Nicaragua

      Hugo Chavez has been providing oil at cheap rates for a while to local mayors in Nicaragua, to the dismay of the Managua based elite and the U.S. government. Now he has promised to provide oil to a country that is gripped by high prices and shortages as the local bully looks on and claims that its “programs designed to improve health, education, trade and development, as well as democracy and the rule of law,” are much more important than Nicaraguans keeping warm. With Nicaragua experiencing a long running medical strike in response to low public sector wages, in itself a result of IMF mandated structural reforms, the election could well send Ortega back to power after sixteen years.

      Donald Davis, a biochemist at the University of Texas, said that of 13 major nutrients in fruits and vegetables tracked by the Agriculture Department from 1950 to 1999, six showed noticeable declines -- protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, riboflavin and vitamin C. The declines ranged from 6 percent for protein, 15 percent for iron, 20 percent for vitamin C, and 38 percent for riboflavin.

    It should come as no surprise that industrial agricultural practices degrade not only the land but also the food itself.
