    • Juan Crow in Georgia

Posted by Shemuses from The Nation

Justeen Mancha's dream of becoming a psychologist was born of the tropical heat and exploitation that have shaped farmworker life around Reidsville, Georgia, for centuries. The wiry, freckle-faced 17-year-old high school junior has toiled in drought-dry onion fields to help her mother, Maria Christina Martinez. But early one September morning in 2006, Mancha's dream was abruptly deferred.

    • Acting Locally: Will Chicago Push Back Against Iran Warmongering?

      Posted by Shemuses from Alternet

A resolution introduced into the council by one of its members, Alderman Joe Moore, would put the city on record as opposing a preemptive strike against Iran by the US. The resolution urges all congressional representatives whose districts include parts of the city to "clearly express the will of the people of Chicago in opposing any attack on Iran, and urging the Bush administration to pursue diplomatic engagement with that nation."

    • Critics of Old Guard Take Black Activism Online

Posted by Shemuses from Washington Post

A growing cadre of young black activists is using the Internet in an attempt to eclipse traditional civil rights organizations such as the NAACP and hit the refresh button on the civil rights movement. Bloggers with names such as the Cruel Secretary, and blogs called What About Our Daughters? and the African American Political Pundit, have railed against groups in the "black-o-sphere," saying they do not understand young black Americans, are behind the times and react too slowly to incidents involving the younger generation.

Essential Reading - Home Girls Make Some Noise: Hip Hop Feminism Anthology

      Posted by Shemuses

So, I grabbed Home Girls Make Some Noise: Hip Hop Feminism Anthology over the weekend and I cannot put it down. Seriously y'all - every spare minute I spend pouring over the pages. While this one is more intellectual than Chickenheads (which makes it a little less accessible) Gwendolyn D. Pough, Elaine Richardson, Aisha Durham, and Rachel Raimist brought it in this collection.

    • A Shout Out to Moms

      Posted by Shemuses

We asked young detainees inside Bay Area juvenile halls to write about their relationships with their mothers in honor of Mother's Day and many of their responses reflected the issues that are breaking families apart today: violence, mental health issues, immigration problems, and drug and alcohol abuse. These authors write for The Beat Within, a weekly journal of art and writing from inside juvenile halls and prisons.

Sharpton owes $1.5 million in back taxes

      Posted by Jeff from MSNBC

Over the past year, Sharpton's lawyers and the staff of his nonprofit group, the National Action Network, have been negotiating with the federal government over the size of his debt, which they dispute. The group has also been trying to pay off tens of thousands of dollars it owes for failing to properly maintain workers compensation and unemployment insurance.

      Snipers in Iraq

      Posted by garrettmoon from Salon

In 2007 elite U.S. snipers executed an unarmed Iraqi prisoner in cold blood. Have the insidious tactics that led to atrocities in Vietnam reemerged in Iraq? Pressure to raise enemy death counts in an attempt to show that the U.S. is 'winning' the war, maybe causing murder of innocent Iraqis.

Dock Workers Shut 29 West Coast Ports in Protest Against the Iraq War

Its funny, but ccarlos’s rant has been removed… wonder how/why?

Picking on cc? If you could read what he wrote, I think I gave a measured response.

Anyway, I’ll gonna "pick on" anyone who promotes war in the name of patriotism or other bs.

Please don’t pick on ccarlos, socean.  You should be grateful that ccarlos is criticising so many pathetic things with the US military and the US Government, and making intelligent observations that a lot of people would be grateful to be told.  Thanks mate.
