      In October, 2006 I went on safari in Uganda for three weeks. I've always loved animals, and this was a chance to get up close to wildlife, camping in the middle of forests and savannah, with lions, elephants, monkeys, hippos and all manner of other creatures. The main highlight of the safari was trekking into the mountains for close encounters with the mountain gorillas, only 700 or so of which remain in the entire world.

      A truce that could spell the end of one of Africa's longest and most brutal wars came into effect on Tuesday, Uganda's military said. Under the pact signed on Saturday at peace talks in southern Sudan, the fugitive rebels from the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) have three weeks to assemble at two south Sudanese camps while negotiations continue to thrash out a final deal to stop their two-decade insurrection.

      Uganda and Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels signed a cessation of hostilities deal at talks in southern Sudan in a major breakthrough in efforts to end one of Africa's longest wars, mediators said on Saturday. The deal, which means both sides cease attacks and hostile propaganda while negotiations continue, is due to take effect on Tuesday, August 29, the chief mediator, south Sudan's Vice-President Riek Machar, said.

      Uganda says development can protect Great Apes

      Opening the Congress of the International Primatological Society -- the first to be held in a country hosting Great Apes -- Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni said conservation efforts would never work if local communities were not developed at the same time. Museveni drew disapproving murmurs from the crowd when he said he backed human medical tests on chimpanzees. But he was still hailed by primates expert Jane Goodall as the first head of state to have addressed one of the society's meetings.
