      A volcano erupted Saturday with little warning on a remote island in Alaska, sending residents of a nearby ranch fleeing from falling ash and volcanic rock. The Okmok Caldera erupted late Saturday morning, just hours after seismologists at the Alaska Volcano Center began detecting a series of small tremors.

      Massive underwater volcano discovered off Sicily

      The volcanic structure, which incorporates peaks previously thought to be separate volcanoes, is at least 1,300 feet high -- taller than the Eiffel Tower. The base of the structure is 18.6 miles long and 15.5 miles wide, spanning an area larger than the U.S. capital and making it Italy's largest underwater volcano.
