      Losing Private Dwyer, War Hero

Posted by Shemuses from New York Times

The photo below captures everything that Americans wanted to believe about the Iraq war in the earliest days of the invasion in 2003. Pfc. Joseph Dwyer, an Army medic whose unit was fighting its way up the Euphrates to Baghdad, cradles a wounded boy. The child is half-naked and helpless, but trusting. Private Dwyer's face is strained but calm. That story turned bitter years ago, of course. And the mountain of sorrows keeps growing: Mr. Dwyer died last month in North Carolina. He was 31 and very sick. For years he had been in and out of treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder and addiction.

    • Will the U.S. Support Terrorists to Destabilize Iran?

      Posted by Shemuses

All attempts to justify a military attack on Iran have failed and the US is now looking at supporting fringe and terrorist groups to destabilize the country. It won't work, says NAM contributing writer, William O. Beeman, but it will destabilize the region for years to come. Beeman is Professor and Chair of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Minnesota. He is President of the Middle East Section of the American Anthropological Association. The second edition of his book, The "Great Satan" vs. the "Mad Mullahs": How the United States and Iran Demonize Each Other, has just been published by the University of Chicago Press.

    • Pentagon extends tour of Marines in Afghanistan

Posted by papadavid from Yahoo News!

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon has extended the tour of 2,200 Marines in Afghanistan, after insisting for months the unit would come home on time. ADVERTISEMENT The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which is doing combat operations in the volatile south, will stay an extra 30 days and come home in early November rather than October, Marine Col. David Lapan confirmed Thursday. Military leaders as recently as Wednesday stressed the need for additional troops in Afghanistan. Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has repeatedly praised the work of the 24th MEU in fighting Taliban militants in Helmand Province. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, however, has repeatedly said he did not intend to extend or replace the U.S. Marines in Afghanistan, calling their deployment there

Russia, Georgia troops battle on border

I imagine, in a more advanced VR environment, they might animate a different, less stressful outcome.  Like they could animate a brightly colored spray of candy or presents instead of sharpnel and body parts parts strewn about the blast site.  Maybe a little, "atta boy," or "outstanding" followed by canned cheering from a studio audience when a particularly good strike is executed.

This scenario of positively re-enforcing the kill could ease the pain of human slaughter and give a real sense of total accomplishment.  The possibilities are endless.  I wonder if drone pilots get better VA benefits than the rest of the "combat" vets do?

Ransom claim in Ingrid Betancourt release | World news | guardian.co.uk

If Betancourt’s assertions are true, then the United States is once again responsible (at least in part) for the setting up of false ‘heroic rescues’ and similar phenomena.

We should not forget that intitial reports from Iraq claimed that Kurdish forces captured Saddam Hussein, who then turned him over to Coalition forces.

Neither should we forget the Pat Tillman and Jessica Lynch affairs.
