    • Medical marijuana patients denied a spot on transplant list

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Times

When dying patients need a transplant, should it be held against them if they've used dope with a doctor's blessing? "Most transplant centers struggle with issues of how to deal with people who are known to use marijuana, whether or not it's with a doctor's prescription," said Dr. Robert Sade, director of the Institute of Human Values in Health Care at the Medical University of South Carolina. "Marijuana, unlike alcohol, has no direct effect on the liver. It is however a concern ... in that it's a potential indicator of an addictive personality."

    • Microsoft Told to Pay Tax on Licence Fee (in India, not Washington)

      Posted by Jeff from Yro.slashdot

The company, which sells its software in India through a circuitous route involving several group companies, had maintained that its deal with the customers is a sale and no royalty payment is involved. It is this position that has now been rejected. What nailed the issue, however, was an expression in the end-user agreement that says "the product is licensed, not sold". Tax authorities cited this and said if the software is licensed, there has to be a royalty involved.

Legislature OKs bill to put state-grown food in schools

Posted by Jon from Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Senate Bill 6483 relaxes food-purchasing regulations to allow schools and state-run institutions to buy fresh produce and meats from Washington farmers -- even if locally grown products cost a little more than their processed or canned counterparts.

    • High-tech giants seeking massive tax break

Posted by Jeff from Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Microsoft and a handful of other tech giants are quietly securing a state tax break that could be worth more than $1 billion through legislation forged amid corporate threats and an interstate bidding war for computer server farms that have become the backbone of the Internet.

    • Idealog: Top Reader Excuses for Microsoft's Tax Avoidance

      Posted by Jeff from Idealog.US

After my editorial suggesting Washington State close the loophole on Microsoft's tax avoidance schemes was published by Crosscut and linked by Slashdot (Creative Capitalism Gets Microsoft a $528M Tax Break), readers posted more than 542 comments, many defending Microsoft's practices. I am always struck by the arguments people use to defend corporate entities that dodge taxes, so I decided to summarize and respond to the most common arguments.

Microsoft's $528 million Washington tax break

      Posted by Jeff from crosscut.com

When I heard that Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates had invoked the phrase "creative capitalism" at last month's World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, it reminded me how Microsoft avoids paying taxes on Washington-made software by selling it through Nevada.

You are misunderstanding – this is about Washington B & O taxes on corporations, not income taxes.

Your concern that Microsoft is avoiding paying income taxes to the State of Washington is based on the erroneous belief that there is an income tax in Washington. Please check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_income_tax

I really don’t know what you’re belly aching about.

83 convicted felons freed as state exceeds jail limit

Last I checked conservatives don’t like to pay for taxes for building enough prisons…

But part of the problem is that conservatives want to lock up everyone even for minor drug crimes that could be better treated in specialized treatment programs. What a waste of taxpayer money.

State sends a message, smoker gets $8,000 bill

Techincally, avoiding use taxes by buying online is tax evasion. The law is pretty clear. I wouldn’t be that disappointed if they start enforcing it.
