      Japan's oft-criticized "scientific" whaling fleet will be extra busy this season as it aims to land up to 1,035 whales in what could be the country's largest whale hunt in modern times. Included in the toll: up to 50 humpback whales, the first time they've been targeted in some 40 years.

      'The Japanese whaling program next year envisages killing humpback whales. Humpbacks are one of the most iconic whale species. I know this program is going to generate enormous hostility from round the world,'' he said. New Zealand would voice its opposition to the program with the Japanese at the IWC's next annual meeting, in Alaska in May, he told New Zealand's National Radio.

      The Japanese say they take only Minke Whales but Blue have been taken too: The country admitted yesterday that this year's hunt - due to kill 945 whales by mid-March - will probably have to be abandoned as a result of a fire that has crippled its fleet's mother ship, the Nisshin Maru, and raised fears of an oil spill into the area's pristine waters

      Japan suffered a resounding defeat on Friday at the International Whaling Commission, calming fears among conservationists that might finally win enough support in the world body to start attacking a ban on whaling. "So far we have managed to dodge the harpoon," said Joth Singh, director of wildlife and habitat protection for the International Fund for Animal Welfare.
