    • Bloggers sore over Motrin ad

Posted by Shemuses from Globe and Mail

Don't mess with the mommy bloggers. That's a lesson the makers of Motrin have been learning the hard way over the past two days, after a blogosphere campaign forced the company to pull a viral web ad and issue a public apology. On Saturday, U.S. pharmaceutical company McNeil Consumer Healthcare posted an ad on the Motrin website aimed at moms who may be suffering back pain from carrying their babies in baby slings or baby-Bjorn-style carriers. The ad begins with a female voiceover, musing, "Wearing your baby seems to be in fashion. I mean, in theory it's a great idea."She goes on to list her aches and pains, concluding, "I mean I'll put up with the pain because it's a good kind of pain; it's for my kid. Plus, it totally makes me look like an official mom..."

      The Corniest Line Ever Award

"This guy who was so not my style came over to me and my friends and asked: 'Do you happen to know how much a polar bear weighs?' We said no and kept walking, and then he said, 'Well, it's enough to break the ice. Hi, I'm Brian.' We all cracked up and kept talking to him."

    • South Dakota Abortion Ban in Dead Heat

      Posted by Shemuses from Alternet

If the ban passes, it will present a challenge to Roe at the Supreme Court. In 2006, South Dakotans voted 56 to 44 percent against a law passed by the state legislature which would have outlawed all abortion in the state. But polling done by a South Dakota newspaper after the ban was defeated found that an abortion ban with exceptions would likely pass in the state.

Stop the Hammer -- What makes a man become an abuser?

      Posted by Shemuses

As a professional working with men in areas that include domestic violence, I now know that I was not alone in my exposure to domestic violence. According to a report by the Department of Justice, black women experience intimate partner violence at a rate 35 percent higher than white females and about 22 percent higher than women of other races. In addition, black women are 2.4 times more likely than white women to suffer from severe forms of abuse. And, hauntingly, domestic homicide is now the leading cause of death among African-American women between the ages of 15 and 45.

      Posted by ap101

October 21, 2008, Washington, DC: The Zonta Club of Washington and The Advocacy Project (AP) have launched a blog group to connect professional women in the Washington area with young American women volunteering for human rights overseas.
This innovative use of information technology was developed during the summer, when eight Zonta members in Washington decided to follow the blogs of graduate students serving as AP Peace Fellows in Serbia, Kosovo, Uganda, Jordan, El Salvador, Nepal and Kenya.

      The MILFy Way

How the GOP is using this low-grade obscenity to sell Sarah Palin. Homespun. Folksy. Straight-talking. These may be just a few of the endearing terms pundits have used to describe Sarah Palin. But there's another, more salient, tag floating around the Alaska governor, a secret weapon that was on winkin' and twinklin' display during the debate. Few Beltway commentators would dare call this stealth device by name, but the ever-crafty McCain/Palin camp seems to be counting on it to help pull its overmatched ticket across the finish line come November: "MILF" appeal, as in "Mother I'd Like to F...."

    • LaBruzzo considering plan to pay poor women $1,000 to have tubes tied

Posted by Shemuses from Times Picayune

Worried that welfare costs are rising as the number of taxpayers declines, state Rep. John LaBruzzo, R-Metairie, said Tuesday he is studying a plan to pay poor women $1,000 to have their Fallopian tubes tied. "We're on a train headed to the future and there's a bridge out, " LaBruzzo said of what he suspects are dangerous demographic trends. "And nobody wants to talk about it."

Her politics of racism, hate, support for Big Oil, the Alaskan Independence Party, all make her as un-MILFY as is possible, for me. Add to that her bizarre religious practises, her lying at will, even her backstabbing of her Republican patron in Alaska, all make her so repulsive as a human being, she’s the quintessential MI (would never, ever, even if she was the last woman on earth)LF.

HHS Moves to Define Contraception as Abortion

The media keeps referring to Bush as a ‘Lame Duck President’, but this is just the sort of damage to freedom that people can expect from the Bush/Cheney White House before a new president is sworn into office in January.  They are expecting us to let down our guard.

I think we can expect an acceleration of unfathomable, unreasonable, unstomachable executive orders and administrative rulings in the final days of the Bush administration.

The Democratic Congress, elected to a majority in ‘06 to end the Iraq war, has taken a huge bet in not impeaching and not confronting Bush and the GOP agenda in order to keep approval numbers low enough for a sweep in November. It’s a huge doubling down – gambling with nothing less than our democracy.

The Advocacy Project is a Washington, DC-based NGO. We seek to help community-based advocates produce, disseminate and use information, and so become more effective advocates for human rights and social justice. AP works directly with a selected number of partner organizations and offer them services aimed at strengthening their information and advocacy.
