      Grace For President | Views | TheRoot.com

Disillusioned with the woman candidate, I found my heroine in a children's book. During this heated campaign for the Democratic nomination, I fell in love with a children's book by Kelly DePucchio called Grace for President. The uber-talented illustrator Leuyen Pham has cast Grace as a beautiful brown-skinned elementary school girl with the brains and moxie to run for president of her school.

Why Obama's wife makes me love him more. Yes, yes, I know damn well, in my higher self, that there are better reasons for liking Barack. His cleareyed intelligence, for one thing. His broad and nonparochial perspective of the world. His preparation, his education, his politics. I like that Obama forwent a lucrative career in corporate America to work with the folks in Chicago. I even like the fact that the man can write, and I mean write, although as a writer who struggles daily to do the work, I kind of hate that too: this talented dabbler, this massively successful dilettante.

      Women's liberation, al-Qaida style

Posted by Shemuses from Globe and Mail

Muslim extremist women are challenging al-Qaida's refusal to include - or at least acknowledge - women in its ranks, in an emotional debate that gives rare insight into the gender conflicts lurking beneath one of the strictest strains of Islam. In response to a female questioner, al-Qaida No. 2 leader Ayman Al-Zawahri said in April that the terrorist group does not have women. A woman's role, he said on the Internet audio recording, is limited to caring for t

Many low-income First Nations mothers feel uncomfortable using aid services outside their community, so when Aboriginal-run programs are cut it puts those women at greater risk of losing their children. Penny Irons, executive director of the Aboriginal Mother Centre Society, said government support for the marginalized group is declining while the number of children in care is consequently skyrocketing.

    • America’s Porn Culture -- Corporate drive for profits is damaging girls

      Posted by Shemuses

College-age women often come to Professor Gail Dines in tears after she lectures about how popular culture has become poisoned with a hyper sexuality that demands women offer themselves to any man who asks. The young women feel isolated and alone because they refuse to degrade themselves in exchange for male companionship, said the professor of sociology and women's studies at Wheelock College in Boston and founder of the Stop Porn Culture movement. It's time to end a corporate-driven effort to promote "slut culture" in the United States, Professor Dines said.

    • 911 Operator: 'I Don't Give a S***t'

Posted by Shemuses from News Channel 5

When you call 911 you hope you're talking to someone who cares about what happens to you. But an exclusive NewsChannel 5 investigation uncovered a shocking 911 emergency where the exact opposite happened. What makes this investigation especially shocking is what one call taker said about the woman he was supposed to be helping.

    The MILFy Way

Her politics of racism, hate, support for Big Oil, the Alaskan Independence Party, all make her as un-MILFY as is possible, for me. Add to that her bizarre religious practises, her lying at will, even her backstabbing of her Republican patron in Alaska, all make her so repulsive as a human being, she’s the quintessential MI (would never, ever, even if she was the last woman on earth)LF.

HHS Moves to Define Contraception as Abortion

The media keeps referring to Bush as a ‘Lame Duck President’, but this is just the sort of damage to freedom that people can expect from the Bush/Cheney White House before a new president is sworn into office in January.  They are expecting us to let down our guard.

I think we can expect an acceleration of unfathomable, unreasonable, unstomachable executive orders and administrative rulings in the final days of the Bush administration.

The Democratic Congress, elected to a majority in ‘06 to end the Iraq war, has taken a huge bet in not impeaching and not confronting Bush and the GOP agenda in order to keep approval numbers low enough for a sweep in November. It’s a huge doubling down – gambling with nothing less than our democracy.
