Rights groups bemoan lack of Beijing protests

      Posted by Jeff from MSNBC

The Beijing Olympics have left the world's human rights groups frustrated and angry - convinced that China has been let off the hook for serious abuses, and adamant that future hosts like Russia must be held to a higher standard. Cheek, co-founder of a group of athletes known as Team Darfur, had his visa revoked by Chinese authorities hours before he was to embark for Beijing. Team Darfur athletes who are in Beijing have acceded to International Olympic Committee curbs on political comment, resulting in what Cheek called "massive suppression of any voice that the government doesn't want heard."

    • Hacker Uncovers Chinese Olympic Fraud

      Posted by Jeff from Yro.slashdot

A new chapter in the ongoing controversy surrounding China's women's gymnastics team opened today, as search engine hacker stryde.hax found surviving copies of official registration documents issued by China's General Administration of Sport of China. The incriminating documents, expunged by censors from the official site and from Google's document cache, still appear in the document translation cache of Chinese search giant Baidu, here (1) and here (2), showing the age of one of China's gold medal winning gymnasts to be 14 instead of 16, the minimum age for competition presented on her government-issued passport. Now that official government documentation is available, how long will the IOC be able to keep a lid on this scandal?

Voters in Ecuador Approve Constitution and Rights of Nature

    Read more here:

"Ecuador is now the first country in the world to codify a new system of environmental protection based on rights," stated Thomas Linzey, Executive Director of the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund.

"With this vote, the people of Ecuador are leading the way for countries around the world to fundamentally change how we protect nature," added Mari Margil, Associate Director of the Legal Defense Fund.

Article 1 of the new "Rights for Nature" chapter of the Ecuador constitution reads:  "Nature or Pachamama, where life is reproduced and exists, has the right to exist, persist, maintain and regenerate its vital cycles, structure, functions and its processes in evolution.  Every person, people, community or nationality, will be able to demand the recognitions of rights for nature before the public bodies."

Tariq Ali, Has the U.S. Invasion of Pakistan Begun?

Not certainly, In fact after United State’s failed seize of Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq, it is no more in a state to pledge War against any other country. Prez Bush has already indicated his stand  on calling back American troops from Inaq  by the  February end.

As far as the recent invasion in the border of Pakistan is concerned, it is some how to put pressure on Pakistan to carry out action against militants in its soil. But no US Invasion of Pakistan.

Neither Pakistan nor  United Nations will allow it…. it’s just a pressure tactic…...
