Aboriginal issues missing from election campaign: First Nations leader
Posted by Shemuses from CBC
A First Nations leader in British Columbia says aboriginal issues are missing from the agenda in this year's federal election campaign. Shawn Atleo, the B.C. regional chief of the Assembly of First Nations, said it's frustrating to see issues like the environment and the economy dominating the election, while federal party leaders are ignoring the issues that matter to Canada's aboriginal population. "It's very difficult to talk about the economy in places like B.C. without talking about title and rights issues and negotiations," he said. "It's difficult to talk about health without considering that First Nations health issues are a top issue in this country."
The Well That Twitter Built - Mashable
Posted by Jeff from Mashable
On September 18th 2008, Mashable's Twitter followers donated $3536 to Charity:Water, an initiative to build wells in Ethiopia. On the same day, our Twitter friend Paul Young raised a further $637 through his Twitter and Facebook accounts. And Twitter user Sarah Townsend hauled in $400 - that's more than $4500, almost exclusively from Twitter, in a single day. With $4000 buying an entire well to supply water to 200 people for 20 years, we can truly call this the "well that Twitter built".
Tariq Ali, Has the U.S. Invasion of Pakistan Begun?

As Andrew Bacevich tells us in the latest issue of the Atlantic, there's now a vigorous debate going on in the military about the nature of the "next" American wars and how to prepare for them. However, while military officers argue, that "next war" may already be creeping up on us.
US Supreme Court’s Global Influence Is Waning
Posted by Shemuses from New York Times
Judges around the world have long looked to the decisions of the United States Supreme Court for guidance, citing and often following them in hundreds of their own rulings since the Second World War. But now American legal influence is waning. Even as a debate continues in the court over whether its decisions should ever cite foreign law, a diminishing number of foreign courts seem to pay attention to the writings of American justices.
Shell facility attacked in Nigeria
Posted by Shemuses from Al Jazeera
An armed group seeking a greater share of oil wealth in Nigeria says it has destroyed part of Shell's operation in the Niger Delta. The claim came days after the group, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend), declared an "oil war" on foreign companies working in the country.
Election Could Herald Changes in U.S. Cuba Policy
Posted by Shemuses from Ipsnews
Cuba policy spokesmen for the two presidential candidates jousted and sniped at a colloquium in Washington last Friday, offering a choice between further hardening of current policies and some hope for a new vision for U.S. Cuba policy. Dan Restrepo, representing the Barack Obama campaign, and Adolfo Franco, speaking for John McCain, addressed a crowd of long-time Cuba hands at the Inter-American Dialogue (IAD), a Washington-based think tank focusing on Latin America and U.S.-Latin relations. "The new U.S. president will be the first in five decades not to face Fidel Castro," noted moderator Dan Erickson of the IAD, adding that after all this time, the U.S. still faces the burning question: "What will happen in Cuba over the long run?"
Neo-Nazi Magazine to Feature Obama Assassination Cover
Posted by theangryindian from Angryindian.blogspot
Neo-Nazi boss Bill White, long given to swaggering threats and proposals for violence, this week went even further than normal - announcing plans for a magazine cover headlined "Kill This ******?" with a photo of Barack Obama and, two days later, publishing the home address of a juror who helped convict another neo-Nazi leader in a federal conspiracy case.
