    • Cut children's fluoride exposure, report to Health Canada urges

Posted by Shemuses from Globe and Mail

An expert panel Health Canada commissioned to study the risks of fluoride exposure says the government should cut the recommended amount in drinking water, encourage the use of low-fluoride toothpaste by children and have makers of infant formula reduce levels in their products. The panel recommended reduced fluoride exposure because it was worried children might be getting too much of the chemical from diet, water and toothpaste, placing them at increased risk of fluorosis, said Steven Levy, a panel member and a research professor at the University of Iowa's College of Dentistry.

      Protecting the Youth Vote

      Posted by Shemuses

At a time when organizations across the country are focused on increasing voter registration, the lobbying and advocacy organization Student Association for Voter Empowerment (SAVE) has worked to make sure that when those newly registered voters go to the polls, their votes will count. On July 25, SAVE held a jam-packed forum to discuss the representation of young people in the media. The forum, called Asserting the Youth Voice, had a panel that included Thomas Friedman, author of the best selling book The World Is Flat; Judy Woodruff, senior correspondent for The News Hour With Jim Lehrer; U.S. Congressman Joe Scarborough; Newsweek editor Eleanor Clift, and former white house press secretary Mike McCurry.

      Denied kindergarten for being Native?

Posted by Shemuses from ABC Local

Five year old Adriel Arocha is being blocked from attending school in a Houston-area school district. The reason? As an Apache, he has long hair that he has been growing in his Native cultural tradition that "violates" this school's dress code rules. The parents of a kindergartener in Fort Bend County are fighting for his right to have long hair in school. They say it's about freedom of religion. The Needville Independent School District says it needs proof. When Adriel Arocha, 5, was born, his father, Kenney, vowed to teach him his heritage. "We feel that it's important to raise him as Native American until he's able to make a choice," said Kenny...

      Gen-Y and the Colorblind Lie

      Posted by Shemuses

For millenials, race is more complicated than ever.

"Are you serious?" he asked. And though I was, I couldn't help but notice the disbelief in his blue eyes; his pale face furrowed in confusion. I searched his expression for an inkling of empathy. There was none. "Why?" he had to wonder, "can't I say the word 'nigga'?"

    • National Hip Hop Political Convention Opens in 2 Weeks

      Posted by Shemuses

What role will this year's convention play in these historic presidential elections? Since the first National Hip-Hop Political Convention was held in Newark New Jersey in the summer of 2004, young voters have come to the polls in big turnouts, driven by a landmark surge of young voters of color. This surprised many long-time political observers, but not the organizers of the Convention--full disclosure: I was there--who had seen the growth of hip-hop activism and organizing around the country.

GOP VP candidate Palin's 17 year old daughter is pregnant

The differences in the Republican media coverage of Jaime Lynn’s pregnancy and that of Bristol are vast (though not that flip-flopping surprising). If I remember correctly, the Republican media thoroughly blamed Jaime Lynn’s parents for not raising their child properly and teaching her the not-usually-successful virtue of abstinence. Also, Palin apparently cut huge funding for a program in Alaska that supports teen mothers, putting responsibility on teens’ families. Unfortunately, not too many families have the same privileges as the Palins. Once again, we have the potential of outfitting the White House with a couple of lousy politicians who might be fun to go have a beer with (and argue their values), but are entirely unsuitable for genuine, positive leadership. Help us!!

Glad that I can entertain you.  How much ruling and how much governing have the republicans done as of late?  Closed door sessions with big oil, ya, that’s governing.  I don’t trust that a McCain administration will act any differently.

"expand government control of and intrusion into our lives as well as its reach into our pocketbooks"

Since when does making sure the gov’t has the money to help those most in need mean gov’t expansion?  As in making sure FEMA isn’t run by some unqualified friend of a friend?  Or actually funding ‘no child left behind’ (not saying it is a good program, but fund it at least)? Oh, right, America’s neediest, are on their own, why should you or we care about them?  Why can’t they just get a job/pay for health care/get off drugs?  When people like that suffer and stay in jail/not treated/etc., our society pays a lot more than some taxes we might have to pay.  I am not a bleeding liberal, the pure economics of it state that if a little is paid up front to get someone on their feet, the down stream savings in health care, public lawyers, prison, etc… does more than make up for the cost up front. I know there is no utopia, some people will always suffer, but a gov’t and society that tries to help the weakest link, is stronger and richer for it.

Also, Obama hasn’t talked about raising taxes for the lower to middle classes, just for the richer of those among us.

Biden brings more stability to the ticket than does Palin.  Even Lieberman is a better choice.  He knows how to buck the Washington crowd more so than Palin.  Just that he doesn’t favor government’s control over women’s bodies/lives…

By the way, glad that there is a forum like this so that I don’t have to always preach to the choir…

It’s clear that Palin is much more like Bush than McCain, although McCain has flipped to the President over this past year. His 90% voting the Bush line doesn’t look like any maverick to me. Palin’s crazy religious views reflect Bush. I remember counseling a young college student who had stabbed a young lady in his chemistry class because "God told him to." Her firing of staff people in her city hall because they didn’t agee with her mirrors Bush to a tee. How can a reputable party strongly endorse someone who so closely replicates an individual who has only a 29% support, which I have always believed is very suspect. No, John McCain didn’t vet this individual he just fell for another pretty face.

Yet again.  This choice shows the Republicans just want to win so they can keep ruling, not governing,  the country.  She doesn’t even know what the VP does.  But she does think the way the farther right does, and that makes her ‘qualified’.  Political cronyism…Just like Brown (who ran FEMA during Katrina) and Alberto Gonzales (the former AG who was just  cited for misshandling classified documents, he didn’t put them in his safe at home b/c he forgot the combo).  Even David Brooks of the NYT doesn’t think she is a good VP candidate.  Great judgement Mr. McCain.  Hillary’s supporters know Gov. Palin does not represent their values.

After further study and input I find this woman is a religious lunatic, the kind children often rebel against and do extreme acts just to dizt the parent.

Apparently, Sarah Palin’s future son in law isn’t yet finished with finishing school.

Not sure how representative he is about GOP family values.
