    • YouTube Fires Back At Viacom

      As we say in the legal profession, 'issue has been joined' in Viacom v. YouTube. In its answer to Viacom's complaint (PDF), filed Friday, YouTube says Viacom's lawsuit is intended to 'challenge... the protections of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act ("DMCA") that Congress enacted a decade ago to encourage the development of services like YouTube.' It goes on to say that the suit 'threatens the way hundreds of millions of people legitimately exchange information, news, entertainment, and political and artistic expression.'

      Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., called Monday for YouTube to take down al-Qaida videos that users had posted, but the site said most of the videos his office had flagged did not contain material that violated their guidelines and rejected his request that they act to remove all material from U.S. designated terror groups.

      What's the big deal? Flickr, which is owned by Yahoo, is hardly about to slay the Goliath that is Google's YouTube. But while this may not sound like an online revolution, it does significantly enhance the Flickr experience for its 42 million monthly visitors. Kakul Srivastava, the company's director of product management, calls these short videos 'long photos' moving snapshots that people can take with their point-and-shoot digital cameras.

      An Internet expert likened the cause of the outage to "identity theft" by a Pakistani telecommunications company, which accidentally started advertising itself as the fastest route to YouTube. But instead of serving up videos of skateboarding dogs, it sent the traffic into oblivion.

      EU lawmakers fume over erotic YouTube clip - Online World

      Commission spokesman Martin Selmayr said the shots in the clip — drawn from award-winning films such as "Amelie" and "Bad Education" — highlighted Europe's tradition of rich cinema. Selmayr said Tuesday that he had not received any complaints about the video, which was presented at the Berlin Film Festival in February as part of a four-clip media campaign.

    Ironic considering Matt Sone and Trey Parker are such civil Libertarians. Then again they had no control over whether CC showed the image of mohammed on Cartoon wars.

    This is what happens when greedy corporate paper pushers have control over creatives.

    Comedy Central. There’s a laugh. NLOL. Here’s a group that says ‘Ok’ to endless showings of the exact same movies (Orange County, Blue Collar Tour, Office Space, Saving Silverman, etc.) then has the audacity to pull a stunt like this youtube business. You should have enough material to steal first, then shoot the ‘sue you’ gun. In my eyes this is like the BBC trying to sue Bill Gates for using too much electricity.

    Viacom may not miss YouTube as much as some people think.


    The company recently began offering so-called embed code that allows fans of popular programs such as the South Park to post clips to their MySpace.com pages or blogs. That embed code duplicates one of the more popular features of YouTube: the ability to easily post videos on other Web sites and blogs.
